New Enterprise Stone & Lime’s Paul Detwiler Jr. dies

Paul Detwiler Jr., owner of New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., died Oct. 11 at the age of 85.

A 2017 Pit & Quarry Hall of Fame inductee, Detwiler worked at New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. for more than 55 years, making a well-known name for himself in the aggregate industry. A man of innovative solutions, Detwiler was passionate about his work and always strived for improvement.

“He’s the epitome of a quarry man,” said George Sidney, president and COO of McLanahan Corp. upon Detwiler’s induction to the Pit & Quarry Hall of Fame. “He never lost touch with the man on the quarry floor. He has always kept his hand in the operations group.”

Born in New Enterprise, Pennsylvania, Detwiler served as a U.S. Air Force captain and graduated from Gettysburg College, where he met his wife of 61 years, Patricia Buffet. He also a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church and was involved in the Bedford Rotary Club, as well as other community initiatives.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family, with arrangements by Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bedford Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 7, Bedford, PA 15522, or to Old Bedford Village, 220 Sawblade Road Bedford, PA 15522.
