An estimated 687 million metric tons (Mt) of construction aggregates were produced and shipped for consumption in the U.S. in the second quarter this year, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports.

The mark is essentially unchanged compared with aggregate production from the second quarter of 2021.

USGS came to its estimates based on input from its quarterly sample survey of aggregate producers.

According to USGS, the five leading states, in descending order of second-quarter production for consumption, were Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Their combined production for consumption in the quarter was 206 Mt – an increase of 7 percent versus the second quarter of 2021. The top five represented 30 percent of the nation’s quarterly total, USGS says.

Back in June, USGS reported that aggregate production was up 4 percent in the first quarter nationwide.

Crushed stone

In crushed stone, an estimated 413 million metric tons were produced and shipped for consumption in the U.S. in the second quarter. That mark is a slight increase versus the second quarter of 2021.

The five leading crushed stone-producing states in the second quarter were Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Missouri and Ohio. Their combined total production for consumption in the quarter was 142 Mt – an increase of 8 percent compared with the second quarter of 2021. The top five represented 34 percent of the U.S. total, USGS says.

Sand and gravel

In sand and gravel, USGS says the estimated second-quarter output was 274 Mt. The mark is about the same as the total produced in the second quarter of 2021.

The top five sand and gravel-producing states were California, Texas, Arizona, Minnesota and Washington. Their combined total production for consumption in the quarter was 94 Mt for an increase of 3 percent versus the second quarter of 2021. The top five accounted for 34 percent of the U.S. total.

Portland cement

Portland cement consumption, meanwhile, was up 3 percent in the quarter compared with the second quarter of 2021.
