The 33rd edition of Bauma, the world’s largest construction machinery trade show, is slated to take place Oct. 24-30 in Munich, Germany. Ahead of the show, P&Q caught up with Nicole Schmitt, executive director of Messe München – the organization running Bauma – to learn about the largest global industry event taking place in 2022.

What can Bauma attendees expect at the 2022 show?

Bauma is an incredibly fascinating event. In a few days, the decision-makers of the industry come together here. With its numerous exhibits, live demonstrations and, in particular, innovations, Bauma is the international platform – as well as the undisputed leading trade fair in the industry – and an absolute must-attend event. The atmosphere on site is simply unique, and after three years of preparation, we are all looking forward to the first day of the show.

Another important and interesting fact is that we have given Bauma key topics that reflect the future topics of the industry – namely construction methods and materials of tomorrow; the way to autonomous machines; mining sustainably, efficiently and reliably; the digital construction site; and the road to zero emissions. These are not only discussed at several levels, but we will all see solutions to the challenges of the industry live at the stands.

How does this year’s show compare to the last time the show took place? Did the pandemic alter any ways in which Bauma will operate?

We are not foreseeing big changes for Bauma 2022 apart from the fact that we have enlarged some of the aisles in the halls, which were very narrow. All in all, we are convinced Bauma 2022 will feel like a ‘normal’ Bauma and that we will again be the meeting place for the entire industry – also in terms of internationality. Our other international trade fairs have shown us that.

What else should those in the U.S. know about Bauma 2022?

Brand new at Bauma is the so-called start-up area. It is the place where young companies can present their innovative ideas at small booths. In addition, they have the chance to hold lectures in the Bauma Forum to present their innovation and ideas.

The Bauma Forum features international lectures, keynotes and discussion panels and focuses on one of Bauma’s key themes each day.

At the science hub, universities and colleges have the possibility of presenting research projects, building and maintaining networks and bringing research to life by presenting it vividly. The aim is to show the link between research results and vocational training, winning project partners from the industry, exchanging ideas with other colleges and universities, inspiring young people to study technology and, finally, conveying that technology can be fun and exciting.

Last but not least, Bauma once again features Think Big, an offering for trainees, students and young professionals where they gain an insight into the construction machinery industry as a whole – including its different career opportunities.
