msha-logoThe Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) extended the comment period for the proposed rule addressing Examinations of Working Places in Metal and Nonmetal Mines.

According to MSHA, the proposed workplace examination requirement will impact mine operators. The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register on June 8, 2016. MSHA plans to extend the deadline for comments from Sept. 6, 2016, to Sept. 30, 2016.

MSHA requested comments on whether it should require examinations to be conducted within a specified time period and if it should require anyone designated as a “competent” person to have a minimum level of experience in identifying workplace hazards. Mining industry associations will submit comments, and anyone is encouraged to write a letter to MSHA regarding the proposed rule, MSHA adds.
