Martin Marietta’s Nye visits with Trump on infrastructure

By |  April 5, 2018

Martin Marietta‘s Ward Nye met recently with President Trump to discuss rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, and he is optimistic about the road ahead following the visit.

“It was a good dialogue,” says Nye, Martin Marietta’s chairman, president and CEO, in an interview with Fortune. “I’m certainly not the first person to speak with him about this, and I’m sure I won’t be the last person to speak with him about this. But we have [had] an underinvestment for a long time in infrastructure, and he wants to address that.”

In the Fortune interview, Nye also addressed the state of the gas tax, the Trump border wall and the trade tariff and the effects these areas might have on Martin Marietta and the construction materials industry.

As for the business environment, Nye says reports from Martin Marietta’s customers are very positive.

“I’m hearing from [customers] that they have better backlogs today than they’ve had in more than a decade,” he says. “I’m hearing that they’re having a need to hire more people, and I’m hearing that they’re having record years last year and looking at a better year this year.”
