Great Lakes limestone trade stable in August 2018

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.94 million tons in August 2018, a near-replica of 3.99 millions tons from the same period last year.

The trade bettered the month’s five-year average by 5.8 percent, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association.

Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled nearly 3.25 million tons, a 3.3 percent decrease compared to one year ago, while shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 693,003 tons, an increase of 9.4 percent compared to the same time period last year.

Additionally, year-to-date Great Lakes limestones trade is at 17.2 million tons, a 3.5 percent increase compared with last year.

Michigan and Ohio quarry loadings total 14.1 million tons, equating to a 3.3 percent increase. Meanwhile, shipments from Ontario quarries increased 4.5 percent from last year to 3.1 million tons.
