Great Lakes limestone trade experienced nice bump last year

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 29.5 million tons in 2021, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reports.

The 29.5 million tons is an increase of 11 percent compared to 2020. 2021’s loadings were also 4.8 percent above the trade’s five-year average, LCA says.

Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 23.5 million tons in 2021 for an increase of 11.4 percent versus 2020. Shipments from U.S. quarries were above their five-year average by 2.4 percent.

Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 6 million tons, LCA says, for an increase of 9.3 percent versus 2020. Canadian quarries performed 15.2 percent better in 2021 than their five-year average.
