Great Lakes limestone shipments up in May 2021

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.7 million tons in May, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association. The 3.7 million tons represents an increase of 4.8 percent compared to one year ago.

May’s loadings were below the month’s five-year average by 2.9 percent.

Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 2.9 million tons, an increase of 6.2 percent compared to a year ago. Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 801,551 tons, a decrease of less than 1,000 tons.

On the year, the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at nearly 6.2 million tons – an increase of 6.9 percent compared to a year ago. Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries total 4.9 million tons, an increase of 2.6 percent. Shipments from quarries in Ontario, Canada, total 1.3 million tons – an increase of 26.2 percent.
