Great Lakes limestone shipments up in July 2021

Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.8 million tons in July, the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA) reports.

The 3.8 million tons represents an increase of 11 percent compared to a year ago. In addition, LCA says the trade was a near match to the month’s five-year average.

Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled nearly 3 million tons for an increase of 13.1 percent versus 2020. Shipments from Canadian quarries increased 4 percent to 839,825 tons.

On the year, the Great Lakes limestone trade stands at 13.8 million tons for an increase of 10.8 percent compared to a year ago.  Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries total 10.5 million tons, an increase of 6.7 percent. Shipments from quarries in Ontario, Canada, total 3.3 million tons for an increase of 26.6 percent.
