Fred Gerstell, the former chairman and chief executive at CalMat who later served Vulcan Materials as a vice chairman and a director, died Feb. 23. He was 81.

Gerstell was at the head of CalMat, whose roots in California stretched back more than a century, when Vulcan acquired the company in 1998. In his early years, Gerstell served in the U.S. Army before joining the Alpha Portland Cement Co., where his grandfather served as president. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he worked for the California Portland Cement Co.

According to the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), Gerstell served the National Stone Association, the forerunner to NSSGA, as chairman in 1999.
