Automation when finding labor is laborsome

Time: 9:30-10:15 a.m.
Location: West Hall 206
Speaker: Scott Dugan, Command Alkon
About the session: Technology is not only instrumental today but is necessary to address the labor shortage. U.S. construction spending remains at an all-time high, but employment is at record lows. The labor shortage is genuine across many industries, but it is especially tough for contractors, materials suppliers and others struggling to meet hiring requirements. This session will discuss several topics, including relieving pressure from the talent shortage through aggregate site automation technologies, and how automation can enable operators to do more with less and get trucks on the road faster. The session will also deliver a firsthand look at producers who’ve improved throughput and profits with automation at play.

Improve efficiency with haul truck customization

Time: 10:45-11:45 a.m.
Location: West Hall 201-202
Speaker: Josh Swank, Philippi-Hagenbuch
About the session: Customized bodies and attachments that allow producers to maximize the efficiency of their off-highway haul trucks will be discussed in this session. Attendees will learn how customizing a new truck or retrofitting an old one can maximize payload capacity; reduce dump times and downtime; eliminate carryback; and minimize repair service and maintenance needs while making the truck more environmentally efficient. The session will close out with a Q&A.

Connected quarry workflow

Time: 2:30-3:15 p.m.
Location: West Hall 207
Speakers: TBD
About the session: Production and quarry managers are using new tools to rightsize supply-demand flow from pit to plant to stockpile. Viewing the entire quarrying process as one enables more informed yet timely business decisions. Seeing load and haul as an input to the plant along with real-time stockpile inventories, a team can work together to solve bottlenecks, improve safety and drive efficiency with an immediate impact to the operation. This presentation will provide practical ideas, examples and an action plan for small and large operations.

Conveyors 101

Time: 9:30-10:15 a.m.
Location: West Hall 216-218
Speaker: Jeff Jurasits, ASGCO
About the session: Conveyors are the lifeline to any aggregate plant’s productivity. Attendees will gain an understanding of conveyor systems, conveyor belts, their components and how they affect plant performance. Get safety guidelines for working on or around conveyors, tips to reduce fugitive material and dust, and ideas for implementing a conveyor inspection and maintenance service program that works for your plant.

Improving efficiency and safety: Case study of Peckham Industries’ Wingdale Quarry

Time: 9:30-10:15 a.m.
Location: West Hall 201-202
Speakers: Kevin DeSilva and Jason Kappel, Peckham Industries
About the session: This session will discuss how Peckham Industries’ Wingdale Quarry has improved efficiency and worker safety while fostering the company’s sustainability and corporate citizenship goals. Operating for the past 27 years as an underground aggregate mine, Peckham constructed a 220-ft.-deep stope hole to connect a newly developed surface quarry to the existing underground aggregate crushing equipment. This serves as a conduit through which surface-mined aggregate is delivered to underground crushers, thereby eliminating the need for multiple haul trucks and long conveyors. Additionally, the surface to underground stope hole connection allowed for the preservation of a scenic viewshed, the reduction in underground operational area, and the development of a more productive and safer surface quarry. Attendees will hear about the planning, construction and benefits of the project.
