ABB launches DC variable speed drive

ABB released its DCS880 variable speed drive (VSD).
According to the company, this new drive allows users who are invested in a DC system to have the option to continue using DC technology while better aligning with modern AC advancements.
The DC VSDs are built on ABB’s common drive platform and share the same control panel, features and tools as recent and future generation ABB drives.
The DCS880 VSDs can also be integrated with the company’s ABB Ability monitoring services. They feature a number of built-in functions, including safe torque off, which prevents unexpected startup of machinery.
DCS880 VSDs have the flexibility to meet the needs of a broad range of industrial environments and applications with speed and torque control in a compact, space-saving design that easily fits into electrical control rooms, the company adds. They include a number of ready-made, dedicated application programs, including those for industrial, harbor, tower and marine deck cranes.
Other suitable applications for the DCS880 VSDs include extruders, winches, winders, conveyors, mixers, mill stands, centrifuges, test benches, elevators, electrolysis and kilns, ABB says.
ABB’s smartphone service applications, Drivebase and Drivetune, connect wirelessly to the drive. The drives also featured optional Bluetooth connectivity.
