Pit & Quarry

In this issue we begin explaining the first of several numbers that go into determining our monthly Pit & Quarry Index value. This month we explain how the Producer Price Index (PPI) plays a role. Certain PPI figures are plugged into our formula, which was developed after analyzing three years worth of industry-related data and determining which of it had the largest impact on aggregates-industry stock prices. After much tinkering, we've put together a formula we believe is incredibly accurate in representing the health of the aggregates industry.

ConExpo-Con/Agg 2008 is quickly approaching and we've put together a special preview beginning. This includes a full section of aggregates-industry equipment that you can expect to see at the show, along with the booth numbers (or outdoor lot numbers) of where you can find it. We'll preview even more aggregates equipment in our March issue.

The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association is celebrating the almost certain defeat of the S-MINER Act. Although the legislation passed the House, a presidential veto threat is almost certain to kill it. Read more about it in our News Watch section. Next month, Senior Editor Brian Richesson will have an in-depth analysis of the demise of the S-MINER Act, and where safety legislation goes from here.

We want to hear from you

A new publisher is making its readers into editors. The company is 8020 Publishing, and it offers two consumer magazines — a photography publication and a travel magazine called Everywhere.

The magazines are unique in that readers supply all text and photos. "You're going to see more of this," said Samir Husni, chairman of the journalism department at the University of Mississippi. "I don't think it's just about getting cheap content into a magazine. Seeing their own work in print makes people feel like part of a community."

In that same spirit, we'd like to hear from you. Write us at
, and tell us about any unique things your company is doing to boost production, make for a safer work environment, or build strong community relations. If we get a good response, we'll begin publishing your ideas.
