Passing the baton
December 1, 2006 By: Pit & Quarry Editorial Staff Pit & QuarryWhen I took on the job of editor-in-chief of Pit & Quarry more than a decade ago, I was the next in a long line of editors trusted with the mission of bringing the best business information available to the nation's stone producers. Following in the footsteps of industry legends such as Walter Trauffer and Buren "Sandy" Herod was no small feat, but I rolled up my sleeves and jumped right in.

Over the past 10 years, Pit & Quarry has grown from playing second fiddle in a two-book market to being the clear market leader in a four-book market. Those years have been highlighted by a return to the publication's traditional focus on equipment and technology and the launch of new publishing projects such as the Market Reference Guide, Portable Plants & Equipment magazine, and the reinvented Equipment & Technology Handbook. The past 10 years have also been landmark years, owing to the emergence of the Internet and Pit & Quarry's growth in the area of digital media information products.
I am proud of all we have achieved in the almost 11 years I have served as editor-in-chief, but it is time to pass the baton. This will be my last column as Pit & Quarry's editor-in-chief.
I am very pleased to announce the promotion of Managing Editor Darren Constantino to the position of editor-in-chief of Pit & Quarry. The promotion is well deserved. Darren has more than 10 years of experience covering the aggregates industry, first as a staff editor in the late 1980s, then again as managing editor of the magazine, a position he has held since 1997.
I have great confidence that Darren will be very successful at the helm. His industry knowledge, attention to detail and fresh perspective will serve him well.
As for me, I'm not going far. You will continue to see my ugly mug in the magazine, as I will continue to write for Pit & Quarry. In addition, I will be focusing my efforts on industry research, analytics, business metrics and digital media products. It has been my pleasure to serve the nation's stone producers as editor-in-chief of this magazine. Best of luck to you.
