Oberstar still plans highway bill mark-up
September 3, 2009Although it seems unlikely, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., still plans to mark up the Surface Transportation Authorization Act starting the second week of September, NSSGA reported in its weekly newsletter. However, word from the House Ways and Means Committee is that it has not drafted the financing of the bill, and the staff says an increase in the user fee on gasoline is not possible. An extension of SAFETEA-LU would seem inevitable since it will be difficult to complete work on a new bill before expiration of the current law on Sept. 30. NSSGA is consulting with its coalition partners and waiting to hear from Oberstar regarding the length of an extension. The Senate continues to support an 18-month extension of the current law during which work would be completed on a multi-year bill.
