Five teams compete in mine rescue contest

November 2, 2009

A North Central Regional Mine Rescue Contest will be held Nov. 3-5 at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 Apprenticeship and Skills Improvement Training Site near Wilmington, Ill. The event includes a mine rescue field contest, plus optional first aid, apparatus bench and multi-gas meter bench contests. The contest is open to any metal and nonmetal mine rescue team in the United States. The five teams competing in this event are POWC – Lafarge; Vulcan Materials (composite team drawing from three mines in the Chicago area); U.S. Gypsum Sperry mine from Sperry, Iowa; Detroit Salt; and Eastwood Fire and Rescue from Louisville, Ky. (a municipal volunteer fire department that provides mine rescue services to several mines in the Louisville area). Mining International of Joliet, Ill., is a sponsor of the event, working with MSHA, Local 150 and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to hold the contest. Companies, both public and private, as well as labor, state and federal agencies come together to support a common theme of improved mine rescue training and coverage.  p>
