Neal Merrifield, metal/nonmetal administrator at the Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA), will retire later this month, the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) reports.

Joe Main, assistant secretary of labor at MSHA, made the announcement during an MSHA stakeholder meeting. Kevin Stricklin, MSHA’s coal administrator, will succeed Merrifield on an interim basis.

“We hope that MSHA moves quickly to find an administrator for the metal/nonmetal sector who knows of our operators’ demonstrated commitment to safety and compliance,” says Joseph Casper, NSSGA vice president of safety.
