The Energy & Mineral Law Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation are co-sponsoring this program. The program is accredited for continuing legal education credits in most states. Contact Carolyn May at carolyn@emlf.org with any questions about your state bar accreditation.

Chaired by Daniel Wolff at Crowell & Moring, topics at the event include criminal enforcement of mine safety violations, with speakers from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Labor’s Office of the Solicitor; investigations and documents requests, with speakers from the Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA); the Mine Act’s whistleblower provisions; MSHA’s regulatory agenda; judicial deference; effects of bankruptcy on Mine Act enforcement; and workplace safety.

There will also be an update on recent court cases before the Federal Mine Safety & Health Review Commission (FMSHRC), as well as a Q&A session with Commissioner William I. Althen and Robert J. Lesnick, chief judge of FMSHRC.

Former Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal will be the luncheon speaker, addressing topics of special interest to the western mining industry, including recent federal actions related to the sage grouse, “net gain” mitigation policy, land use planning, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
