Senate OKs jobs bill, extending highway funding law

March 17, 2010

The Senate voted 68-29 on March 17 to pass the HIRE Act, a $17.6 billion measure that extends the current surface transportation law until the end of the calendar year, transfers $19.5 billion into the Highway Trust Fund to ensure the solvency of the fund during the extension and restores the rescission that took effect at the end of SAFETEA-LU. Now, work turns to a multi-year surface transportation reauthorization. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said March 15 that a six-year bill is on the White House’s radar.
