Introduction
November 1, 2007 By: Mark S. Kuhar Pit & QuarryBack in the good ol' days of 1907, The first quarry industry "Handbook" was published. History shows it was brought to market by a small company out of Chicago, which in the 1920s was acquired by Pit & Quarry Publications, owners of Pit & Quarry, an industry magazine then just a little over a decade old.

Those first Handbooks were veritable storehouses of information, with product specifications, photos, applications, descriptions and illustrations, all designed to arm the owners of quarry equipment with as much information as possible.
And back then, information was critically important. Many quarry operations were in the middle of nowhere, and repairs had to be done on-site as needed. There was no one to call if the plant went down.
Over the years, The Pit & Quarry Handbook became a reliable – and indispensable – resource for the industry. It was published more or less regularly until the 1970s, and the final hardback, textbook-style edition was published in 1983.
In 1996, the Handbook was resurrected as an "Industry 101" information source. Today, it is used by quarry operators all over the country to help with new-employee initiation; and by anyone with a vested interest in learning what goes on in a quarry.
We are pleased to present this 100th Anniversary Edition of the Pit & Quarry Handbook.
