Production of construction materials faces quarterly, seasonal decline
February 21, 2012Decreases in domestic production for construction materials (cement, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone) during the fourth quarter of 2011 were large compared with production in the third quarter of 2011 but partly seasonal, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Construction sand and gravel declined 28 percent, while crushed stone was down 22 percent. Total construction spending during 2011 was 2 percent less than that in 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. This was reflected in the slight decline in production of construction materials between 2010 and 2011. Crushed stone declined 3 percent, and construction sand and gravel was down 1 percent. The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that privately owned housing starts for 2011 were 3.4 percent higher than those in 2010.
