Vulcan’s Havre de Grace Quarry receives national recognition
March 17, 2010Vulcan Materials Co. announced that its Havre de Grace Quarry in Havre de Grace, Md., has received an Excellence in Community Relations Gold Award from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association. This national award recognizes a superior level of active involvement with and positive contributions to the facility’s neighboring community.
The facility is part of Vulcan’s Mideast Division, which has its headquarters in Winston Salem, N.C.
Havre de Grace Quarry was acquired by Vulcan in 2007 as part of the Florida Rock acquisition. However, the quarry began operations as early as 1905. It is recognized as a vital part of the community as evidenced by the honors it has received from the community and national organizations. Havre de Grace Quarry’s commitment to the Havre de Grace community includes participating in Vulcan’s Adopt-a-School program, partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Harford County, working with the city of Havre de Grace on several ventures, hosting a Community Outreach Day and offering tours of the facility to schools and groups.
“Since the arrival of Vulcan to our community, they have become a great partner to Havre de Grace,” said Havre de Grace Mayor Wayne H. Dougherty. “Vulcan is a partner who has made a very positive impact for the citizens and very supportive of our youth, schools, volunteer groups and local government.”
“Vulcan’s Havre de Grace Quarry has been a positive and active partner with our school. I can’t think of any other organization that deserves this award more,” said Blaine Hawley, principal of Meadowvale Elementary School. “Our students have greatly benefited from this partnership. The ‘quarry guys’ are true friends of Meadowvale and we are proud of them. Vulcan is a real asset to the Havre de Grace community as a whole.”
Hawley is also co-chair of the quarry’s Community Liaison Committee.
Gray Kimel, Vulcan’s Mideast Division president, added, “The employees of the Havre de Grace Quarry exemplify the commitment we have to our neighboring communities. I am proud that our employees have achieved national recognition for the improvements they have made since we acquired the facility in November 2007.”
