MSHA recognizes Sentinels of Safety award winners

MSHA announced the winners of its 2010 Sentinels of Safety Awards. The awards recognize mining operations in various categories that record the most hours in a calendar year without a single lost-time injury. Winners were:

• Quarry Group: Martin Marietta’s Three Rivers Quarry, Smithland, Ky. (Large); and Southwest Stone’s Reef Mine, Ferron, Utah (Small).

• Bank or Pit Group: Unimin Corp.’s Voca Plant, Voca, Texas (Large); and Cemex Construction Materials South’s Cemex-Maricopa Mine, Maricopa, Ariz. (Small).

• Underground Nonmetal Group: Coolspring Stone Supply Inc.’s Coolspring Mining Inc., Uniontown, Pa. (Large); J.M. Huber Corp.’s Miss Linda Mine, Marble Hill, Ga. (Small).

• Open Pit Group: United States Steel’s Keetac operation, Keewatin, Minn. (Large); and New NGC Inc.’s MKaufman-George Pit, Fort Dodge, Iowa (Small).

• Dredge Group: Fordyce Holdings Inc.’s Briggs Plant, Victoria, Texas (Large); and Clayton Sand Co.’s Woodland Plant, Chatsworth, N.J. (Small).

• Metal Nonmetal Mill Group: Basf Catalysts LLC’s Edgar Plant, McIntyre, Ga. (Large); Columbia Quarry Co.’s Dupo Plant #9, Dupo, Ill. (Small).
