Siemens ships 100th AC shovel drive
July 29, 2010Siemens Industry Inc. announced the shipment of its 100th AC drive system for the Bucyrus 495 series shovel. The milestone marks the latest step in Siemens’ 33-year partnership with Bucyrus International Inc. Siemens AC drives are in operation throughout the world in Bucyrus’ shovels and draglines.
Powered by the Siemens AC insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) drive technology, the Bucyrus 495 shovels series uses advanced technologies to achieve productivity and reduce energy consumption. Siemens IGBT drives provide high performance while reducing operating costs through energy efficiency and low maintenance requirements. Siemens IGBT technology uses power semiconductors that provide high efficiency and fast switching for smooth output currents. These drives offer a high stall torque, fast acceleration and high speeds in field weakening.
The drives with IGBT technology are fully regenerative; they take energy that would otherwise be lost and return it to the power grid. Instead of being wasted, braking energy is captured and used to operate other systems in the shovel. IGBT technology also enables the drives to operate routinely at more than 98 percent availability without any routine maintenance required.
