NPR interview with NISA president centers on silica
February 2, 2012National Public Radio (NPR) interviewed Mark Ellis, president of the National Industrial Sand Association (NISA), about the delayed rulemaking for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s crystalline silica standard. The rule has been under review by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for one year. NISA has consistently opposed a lowering of the permissible exposure limit while supporting medical and exposure monitoring at an action level below the limit. During meetings with OMB, NISA “argued for mandatory exposure monitoring and medical surveillance at certain silica levels – the kind of measures that [NISA members are] already doing voluntarily, the NPR story stated. “We have been using this program since 1977 and it’s proved successful in virtually eliminating silicosis from our workforce,” Ellis said.
